About this Case
The Supreme Court has been asked to review the Oregon Court of Appeals’ decision to punish the owners of “Sweet Cakes by Melissa” for not associating with and facilitating same-sex couples’ ceremonies. The vendors believed that participating in the ceremony would send a message that they agree that same-sex marriages should be approved.
Summary of NLF's Brief
We filed this brief on behalf of ourselves and Billy Graham Evangelistic Association, Samaritan’s Purse, National Association of Evangelicals, Concerned Women for America, Congressional Prayer Caucus Foundation, and Pacific Justice Institute. The brief argues that a marriage ceremony is a communal expressive event; and the message that event publishes to the community is about two people getting married. Our brief explains why those who do not believe in celebrating by providing goods for same-sex marriages should not be punished for refusing to do so.
